sources

keeping along my topic of observing drug use and prevention in college lifestyle, i've also devided to narrow the timme span of my research to fairly recent articles and subjects. i found a few interesting books on Iris:

Bachman, Jerald G. The Education- Drug Use Connection: How Sucesses and Failures Relate to Adolescent Smoking, Drinking, Drug Use, and Delinquincy. New York: L. Earlbaum Associates, 2008. Print.

The Challenge in higher education: confronting and reducing substance abuse on campus. Washington, D.C. 2004: Office of National Drug Control Policy

I Also found 376 articles on Academic Search Premier

i'm still trying to filter some out, but a few that grabbed my attention were:

rutgers RIOT

taking the RIOT tutorial i found was a little long for what it provioded. however i did learn a few things about using sources and timeliness of different books and articles. i've completed all five of the sections and i found that i have already learned how to use Academic Search Premier, but it helped me learn more about refworks and how to 'folder' articles that interested me. Using what i've learned i've found a few books or articles that would be perfect for my topic of drugs and alcohol in college life.

Library Qs

i've already attended the library session, and it wasnt my first one
i'm pretty firmilair with some search engines on the rutgers libraries homepage, however i was wondering if there is an easier way to look at books that have been checked out already, the racall button helps, but i'd rather not force someone to return a book they are using only to have it recalled back... is there any way to view parts of books online from rutgers?

#2

i've been trying to focus my topic of the affect of dugs and alcohol, on certain groups of student. being a homosexual in a college atmosphere can provide extra stress on one's life however college also offers more of a 'safe space' than almost any public high school. while searching google for 'college and drugs' i came across a number of stories, articles, and statistice about alcohol and drug related deaths around the country.
i also found an awesome webiste that used information from The Princeton review, and CollegeProwler.com that had some unique statistics: at bestcollegerankins.org
however when i searched 'college and gay' i found mostly websites with tips to handling college, and different depressing articles about gay teens who have committed suicide during their time at school. with most of these articles it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were present during the suicide. i am now trying to find books that will tie these topics together.

first thoughts

thinking about college for me brings up a lot of different issues. throughout my two and a half years at rutgers university, i've already experienced so much more than i had expected. while looking ahead for a topic to write a research paper, i've been thinking about how many sources i would be able to find to support an argument. all thorough many colleges drugs and alcohol play a significant role in students' social life and overall college experience. everyone hears about terrible stories of binge drinking gone wrong, but why haven't they had a larger affect on the 'party' life at school. many students experience a unique time at college, but overall gain the responsability to live on their own. some students also learn the comprimise it takes, when drugs and alcohol are present, on their academic life.
